Engineering Climate Adaptation in the Coastal Frontline

Positioned on the frontlines of global climate change adjacent to the Sundarbans Mangrove forest, RUSTIC operates across districts frequently devastated by category 4 and 5 tropical cyclones, saline storm surges, and complete depletion of fresh groundwater aquifers.

Program 6.4 integrates grassroots emergency disaster response with advanced civil and environmental engineering solutions. This includes community-managed disaster early warning systems, solar-powered reverse osmosis desalination plants, and landmark industrial-scale rainwater harvesting systems developed in strategic technical partnership with WaterAid Bangladesh.

6.4.1 Cyclone Disaster Preparedness & Early Warning

Training and equipping 1,200+ community disaster volunteers with VHF radios, emergency first-aid kits, search-and-rescue boats, and cyclone shelter management protocols.

6.4.2 Industrial & Community Rainwater Harvesting

Designing and installing multi-million liter rooftop catchment, vortex first-flush diversion, and dual sand-carbon filtration systems in garment factories and coastal schools.

6.4.3 Solar-Powered Desalination & WASH Points

Installing solar-powered reverse osmosis water purification plants in deep coastal unions where groundwater salinity exceeds 10,000 ppm.
